Design Principles and Application Scenarios of Reducers

I. Overview of Reducers
A reducer (also known as a tee or reducer joint) is a common pipe fitting used to connect two pipes of different diameters, serving as a transition in the piping system. Reducers can be divided into two main categories based on their structural form: concentric reducers and eccentric reducers.
II. Design Principles
1. Concentric Reducer: The centers of the pipe openings at both ends lie on the same axis, forming a conical frustum shape. When fluid passes through, the flow field is uniform and the flow resistance is low, making it suitable for diameter changes in vertical pipelines and applications with high requirements for fluid flow conditions.
2. Eccentric Reducer: The centers of the two pipe ends are not on the same axis, with one side of the outer wall being flat. It is suitable for reducing the diameter of horizontal pipes, ensuring that the top or bottom of the pipe remains level, which facilitates liquid drainage or gas venting.
Eccentric reducers are further divided into top-flat eccentric reducers and bottom-flat eccentric reducers: the top-flat type is used at pump inlets to prevent cavitation, while the bottom-flat type is used for draining horizontal pipelines.
III. Manufacturing Process
1. Cold pressing: Suitable for small-diameter, thin-walled reducers;
2. Hot press forming: Suitable for large-diameter, thick-walled reducers;
3. Steel plate rolling and welding: Suitable for extra-large diameter reducers.
IV. Application Scenarios
Concentric Reducer Application:
1. Reducing connections for vertical pipes;
2. The inlet and outlet reducers of equipment such as flow meters and valves;
3. Process piping that requires a uniform fluid flow pattern.
Application of Eccentric Reducers:
1. For the reducer connection of horizontal pipes, ensure that the bottom of the pipe is level to facilitate drainage;
2. The pump inlet piping uses a top-flat eccentric reducer to prevent cavitation;
3. Situations where installation space is limited and one side of the pipe needs to be flush.
V. Selection Considerations
1. Select concentric or eccentric based on the pipe layout;
2. A top-flat eccentric reducer must be used at the pump inlet;
3. When high requirements are imposed on liquid drainage in horizontal piping, select a bottom-flat eccentric reducer;
4. The diameter ratio should not be too large, generally not exceeding 3:1;
5. For high-pressure conditions, seamless reducers are preferred.
VI. Execution Standards
GB/T 12459, GB/T 13401, ANSI/ASME B16.9, DIN 2616, JIS B2313, SH/T 3408, etc.
