I. Overview of Elbows
Elbows are commonly used pipe fittings for changing the direction of pipelines, with high usage and wide application in piping systems. Elbows can be classified by angle into 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, etc., by curvature radius into long-radius elbows (R=1.5D) and short-radius elbows (R=1.0D), and by manufacturing process into push-formed elbows, stamped elbows, and welded elbows.
II. Detailed Classification of Elbows
1. Classification by angle: 45-degree elbows are used for small-angle turns in pipelines; 90-degree elbows are the most commonly used, for vertical turns in pipelines; 180-degree elbows are used for U-bends in pipelines, commonly found in equipment such as heat exchangers and boilers.
2. Classification by radius of curvature: Long-radius elbows (R=1.5D) have low flow resistance and are suitable for applications with high fluid transport requirements; short-radius elbows (R=1.0D) have a compact structure and are suitable for applications with limited installation space.
3. Classification by material: carbon steel elbows, stainless steel elbows, alloy steel elbows, duplex steel elbows, etc.
III. Selection Principles
1. Select the appropriate material based on the pipeline medium, pressure, and temperature;
2. Select long radius or short radius based on installation space and flow resistance requirements;
3. Select the elbow with the corresponding angle based on the pipe turning angle;
4. For high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, seamless push-formed elbows are preferred;
5. For large-diameter pipes, steel plate welded elbows may be selected.
IV. Installation Technical Requirements
1. Before installing the elbow, inspect its appearance, dimensions, and wall thickness to ensure there are no defects such as cracks or pores;
2. During welding, ensure that the groove angle and land dimensions comply with the requirements of the specification;
3. When welding stainless steel elbows, anti-contamination measures should be taken to avoid contamination by carbon steel;
4. Alloy steel elbows shall be heat-treated after welding as required;
5. After installation is completed, a hydrostatic test and an airtightness test should be performed.
V. Execution Standards
GB/T 12459, GB/T 13401, ANSI/ASME B16.9, DIN 2605, JIS B2311, SH/T 3408, HG/T 21635, etc.
